Can I persuade you to read "Influence" by Robert Cialdini?

4 out of 5 dentists surveyed say...
Let me give you a trial offer...
everyone else is doing it...
Hey friend, how are you?
Time is running out...

I just finished reading Influence, the Psychology of Persuasion, by Robert Cialdini, and I highly recommend it. Robert Cialdini is a Doctor of Psychology, and in this book, originally published in 1984, he examines the ways in which human beings attempt to influence behavior. Specifically he looks at the techniques of reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity. The book was written to educate people on how to avoid being taken advantage of by these techniques, though he acknowledges that the material can be used for good or evil purposes. Through a series of fascinating examples, Cialdini discusses each of these concepts, and also provides you with strategies for defending yourself against them. The style of the book reminded me of the work of Malcolm Gladwell. There are several entertaining examples and stories backed with just enough academic theory to ensure credibility. It is a great read, chock full of valuable information. I struggled to put it down once I cracked the binding and began reading. If you are looking for a great book, look no further than Influence.
